Speaking ill of the dead

I finally got around to watching this week’s episode of Heroes, tucked away on our trusty PVR.  Wanda can tell you that when I watch movies or television, I instantly notice poorly conceived dialogue and preposterous “because the plotline requires it” situations.  That’s one of my superhero powers.  Heroes is an excellent show, although right from the very first episode I found some characters tedious, poorly written and poorly acted.   Like Eden McCain and Simone Deveaux.

Watching Monday’s episode, there is a point where Simone is pressuring her former boyfriend Isaac Mendez to find her almost-sorta-current boyfriend Peter Petrelli.  This is basically what Simone does throughout the whole series; act ambiguously attracted to and conflicted between former and not-quite-current boyfriends.  And demand assistance from either or both, occasionally.  Then she went and hassled Peter’s brother — Congressional candidate Nathan Petrelli — at his office, in her effort to locate Peter himself.  I can put up with this sort of flaky angst-ridden antics through maybe five minutes of one episode, but not through an entire season’s story arc.  On top of it all, Simone threatened to go public with the revelation that Nathan, Peter and a half-dozen others were closeted superheroes.  Great.  I remarked to Wanda and Dax that this would be a good time for one of Nathan’s Secret Service protectors to double-tap annoying Simone.

That is why I was particularly happy to see this little scene at the end.

Yes, I actually cheered and threw the horns when this annoying character was retired.  What took you so long, screenwriters?  Can we get rid of that annoying Micah kid next, please?  And also his perennially conflicted and annoying mom, Nikki Sanders?  Thanks, and keep up the good work.

You have to be kidding. I saw Sunday’s episode, but that was all about Claire’s dad. No mention of Simone as far as I recall.

I haven’t seen the episode yet but I presume it’s just a flashback. Somehow the writers of Heroes don’t seem to be the type of folks to pull a Bobby Ewing-style fast one and invalidate an entire episode.

Well, it’s not a flashback… and it’s an awesome episode, but the last one till April 23rd 🙁
