Rewarding negligence

The majesty of our law on full display.

The fine upstanding human beings who abandoned their infant daughter last January in a freezing parking lot stairwell have been sentenced to time served (11 months) and a $300 fine.

In 2004, the cost of raising a Canadian child from birth to the age of 18 was estimated to be about $166,762.

In 17 years time, these parents will have saved themselves the potential expenditure of $166,462 dollars, all by abandoning their flesh and blood in a plaza’s parking lot, in the dead of winter.

Thus this transaction will, in the end, be a net positive to them.  Apparently certain crimes really do pay—even when you’re caught.
