Notice to Passengers

tc_no_passportsThe Company has been informed that some of our anti-spam measures (specifically, user registration) were a little too vigorous and have subsequently stifled commenting.

For your convenience, we have therefore removed that requirement.  Security will not be affected, spam blocking is being handled by alternate means.

Thank you for your patronage,

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply the other day, and for making commenting easier! Have a great balance of the week!

On reflection I realised that there were easier ways to achieve the same end. No spam leaks through to the actual published comments, but a few get tagged by Akismet for administrative review. And with one or two exceptions those tagged for review have always been spam.

I wanted to eliminate the administrative review angle entirely, so now the site is screening for non-humans via examination of http headers and a realtime DNS blacklist. Spambots get the hoof before they have a chance to submit anything, and I don’t have to make life tedious for readers with a captcha or something like that.
