Ryan’s Fancy: Squid Jiggin’ Ground

Newfoundland traditional, written by Arthur R. Scammel, CM, in 1928.

In a chivalrous gesture, “Squid Jiggin’ Ground” was played on Parliament’s Peace Tower carillon on April 1st, 1949, to mark Newfoundland and Labrador’s first day as a Canadian province.  It was played on the carillon again on December 11th, 1998 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Terms of Union.
